Sooryavanshi at No. 3: The Shastri Debate Explained — What Is Verified and What Is Only a Viral Post

A viral post on X says Ravi Shastri is angry with the team management over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's batting position. Before we repeat that claim, one honest flag: no news outlet we checked independently carries Shastri calling the No. 3 decision a "very poor decision" or saying he is angry about it. That part currently rests on the post alone. What IS real, and well documented, is the debate underneath it: should a batter who has only ever opened be pushed to No. 3? Here is the whole picture, with the verified facts separated from the viral claim. (Sources split the spelling between Sooryavanshi and Suryavanshi; both refer to the same player.)
Quick answer
| What happened | Sooryavanshi batted at No. 3 in the 2nd T20I at Christchurch and made 4 off 8 balls. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened. |
| Why he played | Ishan Kishan was ruled out with a low-grade right adductor (groin) strain from the 1st T20I. |
| What was expected | Before the toss, RevSportz and SportsDunia both expected Samson to move to No. 3 so Sooryavanshi could open. The toss decision went the other way. |
| What Shastri actually said on record | On Sony commentary before the match, he warned against keeping Sooryavanshi benched too long — "He's warmed the bench long enough; you don't wanna lose his form." That is about benching, not about No. 3. |
| What is NOT verified | The X post's claim that Shastri is angry over No. 3, called it a very poor decision, or said Samson should bat at No. 3. No outlet independently reports any of that. |
What the viral post claims
The post, from Indian Sports Network (@IS_Netwrk29) on October 24, 2026, says Shastri believes that if Sooryavanshi is in the playing XI he should always open, because he has succeeded as an opener in domestic cricket and the IPL; that if someone has to replace Kishan, a middle-order batter should be brought in; and that if Sooryavanshi plays, Samson should bat at No. 3 while Sooryavanshi keeps opening. We are reporting that the post says this. We are not presenting it as Shastri's confirmed words, because no independent outlet backs it up. That distinction matters, and it is why this article exists.
Why the debate itself is genuine
Strip away the viral claim and the argument still stands on solid ground. Sooryavanshi has only ever opened the batting — junior cricket, domestic cricket, the IPL and for India in the shorter format, as per CricketAddictor. His IPL 2026 season for Rajasthan Royals produced 776 runs. In T20Is he has 246 runs in 8 games, with a highest of 81. Moving a 15-year-old opener to No. 3 in his first game back after missing six straight T20I matches is, at the very least, a fair question to ask. It is also worth noting what did NOT happen: Samson stayed as opener, and Sooryavanshi went in at No. 3, was dropped by Bevon Jacobs off Michael Bracewell, and was dismissed in the next over by Nathan Smith for 4 off 8. Those facts are covered in our talking-points piece.

What the team management actually said
Captain Shreyas Iyer at the toss: "Ishan is injured, so Vaibhav comes in for him… Vaibhav is going to bat at number three." That is the only on-record word from the management on the position itself, as per IANS and Daily Jagran. No response from Iyer, coach Sitanshu Kotak or head coach Gautam Gambhir to any alleged Shastri criticism on No. 3 exists in the sources checked — because no outlet carries the criticism itself. Earlier, Iyer had said Sooryavanshi must "wait his turn" because Samson and Abhishek were scoring consistently, and Kotak had said before the match that if Ishan did not play, Vaibhav could definitely step in. Those comments explain the selection; they do not explain the No. 3 call.
What Shastri has actually said on record
Two verified Shastri positions exist. First, before this match, on Sony commentary, he warned India against keeping Sooryavanshi on the bench too long, after the youngster missed a sixth straight match — reported by CricTracker on October 23. Second, back in July 2026, he backed Sooryavanshi's debut against Ireland. Neither is a comment on batting at No. 3. Fans quoting Shastri as the authority for the No. 3 argument are therefore leaning on the viral post, not on a verified Shastri statement. That does not make the argument wrong — his opener-only record makes it a strong one — but it does mean the "Shastri is angry" framing should be treated as a claim, not a fact.
Our verdict
The batting-position question is legitimate and worth debating before Wellington on October 27: a career opener was sent in at No. 3, the pre-match expectation was the opposite, and he made 4 off 8. But the viral headline — Shastri angry, calling it a very poor decision — is, for now, only a post. If a reputable outlet or Shastri himself confirms those words, this article will be updated. Until then, debate the decision, not the quote.
